In practice, a conversion only works when the site and the building can both carry the weight of current requirements. A short feasibility review by a childcare centre architect at the outset is what separates a genuine opportunity from an expensive assumption.

Where a conversion does prove viable, structural, fire, hydraulic and acoustic input all need to be resolved together during concept design and spatial planning, because on an existing building each discipline constrains the others more tightly than on a clear site.
